A Good Start ....Just got a little bit better

On Friday the Redhawks went on the road to Bofors. Malmö have done well all season against the Bobcats and this was no different with a very impressive 9-2 victory, scoring all of four goals in boxplay situations. An emphatic performance, especially in powerplays and box plays, highlights again the improvements Malmö have made in this area all season.

After an impressive start to the Kvalserien on Wednesday against Rögle, things got a lot better on Friday against Bofors. To let four goals in with a man more on the ice was suicide, yet that is just what happened to Bofors. On top of those four Malmö scored another five to come out with an inspiring 9-2 victory and more importantly three road points accumulated.

Signs early on were no indication. Bofors started well and after 5.25 Björn Östlund put them a goal up. To made it worse Robert Tomik was sent to the penalty box soon after for roughing. However Bofors offered nothing in the powerplay and Edvin Frylen scored the Malmös first shorthanded. It was maybe becoming more apparent what was going to happen as the evening progressed.

Semjonovs made it 2-1 and Kim Staal scored a long awaited goal after good work from Riihijarvi and Söderbergh" A tough period where I thought we had great efficiency with the chances we had" considered "Osten" afterwards.

More of the Same
Mikael Wahlberg scored shorthanded early in the second after Matthiassons shot was well saved by Mikael Andersson. The Redhawks controlled the game and with the score at 4-1 the competition was effectively over, we thought! Bofors upped the tempo, went on the attack and a lapse in concentration from the visitors saw Bofors reduce the Malmö lead. Bofors coach Czarnecki thought that "we got energy from that goal" Osten was not so happy.

Czarneckis optimism soon disappeared "unfortunately we totally died" Patrik Hersley made it 5-2 with over two minutes left of the second period. Bofors are a team that never give up. Earlier in the week the came from three nil down to beat Södertälje four - three in overtime. Malmö had to be careful to avoid such a fate. But history was not to repeat itself and Bofors were more or less fried over an open fire in the third period.

It was like a factory production line?producing goals.
After just 1.11 of the third Markus Matthiasson made it 2-6. To avoid getting bored he did the same two minutes later to make it 2-7. After seven minutes Christian Sjögren made it 2-8. There was only one team on the ice and Bofors had nothing to offer. The home fans wondered if the goals conceded was going to stop at all. It did, but not until 12.56 when Juha Riihijarvi made the most of poor defensive play and made it 2-9, shorthanded of course. "4-0 in boxplay, it was almost like we wanted to keep conceding penalties" laughed Osten afterwards as he commented on the unusualness of scoring so many with a man less on the ice.

Osten was of course relieved and happy with a big win which also meant that his team kept the lead in the Kvalserien with a full return of points." We are clearly happy with the win; we were prepared for a tough away game". Osten continued "we have been pretty good at playing in the lead all season. Today we were effective, it was a good team contribution, goals were well spread through the team and they took many fine goals. Riihijärvis goal was a piece of art" mused Osten
